Five types of software to install on a new Windows PC

Microsoft has been the major and the most profited (I guess) player in the computer market. Apple has its Mac series of desktop computers and MacBook series of laptop computers which run on Mac OS. But people who dont prefer Mac go for Windows. Gamers, usually, and casual users, and some kinds of programmers prefer Windows over Mac. Anyway, when you get a new Windows PC, the vendor or the manufacturer of the computer ships it with a Windows OS with some extra manufacturer-specific software, often known as bloatware (some people use a more aggressive word “crapware”).

Skype is now officially a part of Microsoft

In May 2011, Microsoft revealed that it was willing to buy Skype, for an awesome $8.5 billion. But it was not so easy. Microsoft had to get the approval from other governing bodies if it could buy one of the top players in the VoIP and video calling business. And now, it has been successful in getting the deal to its side. Starting October 13, 2011, Skype is officially a part of Microsoft.

Microsoft is trying to create a Windows ecosystem

It all started with Google. Google, which started as a graduation project, spread its wings to different corners of the internet world and started created its own ecosystem. Now, you can do almost anything you want on the internet using only Google services. If you want to search something, you have Google Search engine; if you want to create a document, presentation, or spreadsheet, you have Google Docs, which even works as an online hard disk for any kind of file; if you want to share something with your friends and family, you have the new Google+. Like this, Google has successfully created an ecosystem. Apple is also almost there. Now, Microsoft is taking the same path and is trying to create a Windows ecosystem.

Windows 8 may get some UI changes in the coming beta

Those of us who have used the new Windows 8 developer preview on a non-touchscreen laptop know how painful it is to navigate in the metro style UI with the scroll bar. The UI may be great on the touch screen tablets that will be running it in the future, but majority of the employees in majority of the companies and corporate establishments will be on non-touchscreen desktop computers or laptops. And if Microsoft wants these people to migrate to Windows 8, there has to be enhanced navigation on the metro UI.

Microsoft responds to the Linux lock out rumors

From yesterday, there have been a lot of rumors and new reports on the internet which say that Windows 8 will disallow dual-booting any other operating system, Linux being the “any other” here. This is very bad thing. Even though Windows 8 is graphically more appealing now and even though it has the new Metro apps running on it, Linux is a whole different kind of operating system and we need it for the same and more advanced purposes.

Windows 8 is featuring ‘fast startup mode’

A lot of us use our computers almost continuously the whole day and will want to shut it down completely either at the end of the business day, or at the end of the day when you actually go to sleep. This will usually be a cold turn off, and you might be hibernating or putting your computer to sleep during work for a faster startup. But is that the most efficient method?
