Cube 2 Sauerbraten, an open source game

Are you addicted to computer games? You spend a lot on those expensive FPS games? Why do you when there are so many open source games available for you to download and play for free? And you can play these game on any platform you want, Windows, Linux or MAC. Linux users will surely be happy when you know about this game, I was happy to get such a game to play on my Ubuntu.

The game I’m talking about is Sauerbraten. Being open source, the game provides you all the documentation of the game and the engine used, which is Cube 2. The game is exceptionally good, even the graphics. The game is nothing less than any popular FPS you pay for, it has good graphics, good gameplay, good sound effects and good terrains.

You get a lot of weapons to use. This is something like an alien game, you get lot of frags to kill (this is the best part in such games, I used to play such games a lot when I was in school), a good world to explore and there is lot of shooting in the game. This is actually the first open source FPS I’ve played, and I’m expecting to find many such games (there are a lot actually).

I tried it on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) and Windows (Windows 7), works on both. You can play the game in a network. How much more do you want for free. You can team up with your friends and create a network to play this game in a mulitplayer mode. You can even play the single player mode though.

The website provides a big list of commands you can use in the game (the link is provided at the end of this post). The minimum system requirements needed for this game is not so high end, you can play this on a fairly aged PC. But for optimum performance, consider the hardware part a bit.
