AT&T To Carry BlackBerry 9900, Comes in White
It’s been a hard year for BlackBerry makers, RIM. From the disappointing failure of the rather clever QNX-based BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to the four-day-long BlackBerry Messenger service outage, things haven’t fallen into place for the Canadian handset manufacturer. It’s part of a long trend of BlackBerry falling behind the curve and losing their status as the premier mobile provider since Apple launched the iPhone.
Until their new operating system is ready next year, BlackBerry have done the best they can to boost sales and respect with their flagship handset, the BlackBerry 9900. The phone’s seen quite strong sales, on the back of its upgraded specifications and slim, fashionable design.
As RIM continues to search for ways to keep afloat, the Bold 9900 is expected to be available in a few new flavours. First of all, news broke early last week in Dubai that BlackBerry were looking to introduce a white version of the flagship handset. The leak was made at a technology festival there, where a white BlackBerry 9900 prototype was shown.
White BlackBerrys have become increasingly popular with the fashionista crowd in recent years, with many A-list celebrities making one their phone of choice. Vodafone UK look to be the first to take advantage of the leak, getting their hands on one of the new models and offering it for sale in the very near future.
In a video released on their YouTube channel, Vodafone show off the device in a lot more detail than was available in the initial photo. I’ve got to say, it looks extremely nice in the video, with the stainless steel bezel contrasting nicely with the sleek white chassis of the phone. Expect this version to be the go-to BlackBerry for the fashion-conscious everywhere.
BlackBerry also hope to lift their fortunes slightly with the release of the 9900 on a new network. AT&T in the US have reported via their Twitter that they’ll soon be offering the device. While no further details were specified, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them be the first in the US to offer the sim free BlackBerry 9900 in the new white colour to partially make up for the long period in which they didn’t stock the phone at all.
While these new releases will undoubtedly prove popular for BlackBerry, it’s on the quality of their next round of phones, which are expected to use the new BBX operating system and be released in early 2012, which will determine their future. BlackBerry have proven they can innovate in the past, so I hope – if only for the sake of competition – that they will do a good job with their fresh start. Until then, enjoy the BlackBerry 9900 in white, and on AT&T.
