The iPhone 4 has been Apple’s most successful phone to date. Building on the solid platform left by the first and second generation iPhones it offered a faster processor, more choice and, important to many, video. Yet there were also complaints. The antenna issue dogged its launch and some argued Apple had not done enough to keep itself ahead of its Android competitors and the rest if the smartphone market. This was exacerbated when January 2011 became the month of the dual-core processor. The iPhone 4 would never look clunky and dated, but no longer were Apple the leader of the pack in terms of speed.

So how does the iPhone 4S compare? Well for many it isn’t an iPhone 5, but that shouldn’t be enough to dismiss it completely. The iPhone 4S goes a long way to ironing out some of the issues and hangups of the earlier generation, with Apple hoping it restores their crown as the finest smartphone producer in the market.

The key new features of the iPhone 4S including the A5 chip and iCloud may not be the headline grabbers that many techies were after, but they do pull the iPhone up by its bootstraps.

The antenna issue that caused Apple so much embarrassment could have been solved with the iPhone 4S. Utilising two antennae the aim, evidently is for uninterrupted calls. Yet because the antenna problem was not identified until the iPhone 4 went on the market, it is unlikely the real impact will be discovered when it’s used day after day.

Many expected the iPhone 5 to be a 4G phone. With the new bandwidth becoming available in the UK in the coming years it will be a major jump for smartphones. The iPhone 4S is not 4G compatible but it is much faster than the iPhone 4. Its dual-core processor along with its 14.4Mbps download speed means it will speed through that iOS 5 operating system, the various apps and multi-tasking that so many hard core Apple fans can’t live without. For audiences in the UK the download speed will vary network by network, area by area.

Voice recognition has left Apple behind Android phones. Google searches via voice recognition have been a key feature of the platform. On the iPhone 4 limited voice to rudimentary searches and finding callers. However, with Siri, the iPhone 4S takes it to the next level. The virtual personal assistant combines voice recognition with context making it a more user-friendly experience. The third party app may have been available before the iPhone 4S but the faster operating system will make it more fluid and responsive.

The speed of the iPhone 4S comes from another great Apple love; using existing self-made software and modifying it. The A5 processor in the new device comes from the iPad. Compared with the iPhone 4’s single core processor and A4 chip the user experience will be much quicker, enabling apps to remember and store where they were for a flawless use.

The camera on the iPhone 4 may have utilised video for the first time in an iPhone but it still left Apple behind its major competitors. With only a 5 megapixel camera it was left behind by new releases that utilised 8 megapixels. Similarly, making video clips ate into the 32 GB max on the device. By comparison, the iPhone 4S utilises an 8 megapixel camera and 1080p HD video. Some are calling it the best camera phone device, consigning the compact digital camera to the bottom of the wardrobe. An improved lens makes for better colour accuracy while up to 64GB storage means users can wait a little longer before downloading video to an external storage.

Some may have been expecting the lauded 4 inch screen to be unveiled with the new iPhone. However it remains at the 3.5 inch mark but the iPhone 4S also utilises the same Retina Display of the iPhone 4. On the 960×540 pixel screen it illustrates that if something ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Mark Hirst Managing Director of Best Mobile Contracts believes, “The introduction of dual core processing and improved graphics helps Apple stay on top of its game. New developments such as iCloud, Siri and its new iOS 5 ensure that the iPhone 4S remains one of the leading handsets in the smartphone arena.”
