Siri, the voice-enabled digital virtual assistant that Apple brought on the iPhone 4S, has been a huge hit in the Apple community. Ever since it came out to the developers and the public, there have been countless stories on its awesomeness. Developers have been working hard ever since either to port the app to non-iPhone 4S devices or to make plugins for the jailbroken Siri Proxy server so that people who are not on an iPhone 4S can as well enjoy the app. But it was illegal till now.

We have seen the i4Siri project which is working really well on the iPhone 4, but not so good on the fourth generation iPod Touch. And today, we have another such awesome app, the Spire. Spire comes as a result of two developers,  Grant Paul, a.k.a chpwn, and Ryan Petrich. The Spire app is for jailbroken non-iPhone 4S devices and greatly works like Siri on the iPhone 4S. After all, it is a port.

But as soon as you install the Spire app on your jailbroken non-iPhone 4S devices, it will not start working. You will have to work around it for a while until you get it right. But to make these things a bit more clear, chpwn has written the following on his blog. Read along.

Spire is my (along with Ryan Petrich) new tool for installing Siri on previously unsupported, but jailbroken, devices. Spire is a small download, but while installing it will download Siri itself (directly from Apple). Spire is available in Cydia right now — go get it! This will use about 100 MB of data, so please connect to Wi-Fi before installing.

However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. By using this (ancient) SiriProxy fork, you can setup a proxy using your own iPhone 4S to insert the needed information reasonably easily. Other solutions for proxying Siri will be listed here as they are developed — perhaps that sort of proxy might be included in the main SiriProxy repository.

Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.

There will be more info on this very shortly, so stay tuned.
