I got an interesting email in my inbox yesterday, claiming to be a leak of specifications and a press photo for the Samsung Galaxy S III. The hotly anticipated phone has been subject to constant speculation and rumour; would this leak prove to be reliable, or even interesting enough to post?

It definitely satisfied the second requirement – the specifications were off the charts. The tipster claimed the Galaxy S III would come with a quad core processor, likely Tegra 3, running at 1.8 GHz. This would be backed with a full two gigabytes of RAM, far more than what is currently used in top-end smartphones and tablets. The 4.6” screen would be Super AMOLED Plus and run at 720 x 1280 pixels. The rear camera would also see an upgrade from the S II, with a 12 megapixel snapper of point-and-shoot quality. Finally, the OS would be Ice Cream Sandwich with a good helping of TouchWiz.

The press photo is also interesting, showing off 4G compatibility, an S Memo application that would suggest compatibility with the Galaxy Note’s S Pen stylus and a rather immense home screen widget, showing the weather throughout the day as well as other key chronological and meteorological information.

If true, it would be a great coup for Samsung, as they’d be putting out a phone with capabilities far beyond that of their competitors.

Sadly, it isn’t true. The first signs come from those specifications, which are just a little bit too fanciful to be likely – a quad core processor running at 1.8 GHz, when all other quad core tablets and phones on Tegra 3 run at 1.3 Ghz to 1.5 GHz? 2 GB of RAM, when 1 GB is the most used by other tablets and smartphones? Particular as we know Samsung’s next big mobile chipset will be the dual-core Exynos 5250, it seems highly unlikely that they’ve also got a quad-core ready to launch in the new few months.

The press photo is also a fake, and looks to be a composite of a concept drawn up by Ukranian organisation admost.photo.lab last July with some touches from the Samsung Galaxy Note (e.g. the S Memo). There’s no way that a full stylus like the S Pen would fit inside a 4.6” chassis, which is another strike against its authenticity. Finally, why would the Galaxy S III, which is being launched at a European conference like MWC, come with 4G support when it’s virtually unknown here?

So to conclude – definitely a fake. Don’t trust anything you read on the Internet (except this, of course!) and don’t believe a leak unless there’s a something of substance behind it – like a real world photo or video. We’ll only know for sure when – or if – the Samsung Galaxy S III launches at MWC in a few weeks time.
