Windows Live Photo Gallery is a part of the Windows Live package which you can choose to download. The whole package is free. I recently reviewed the new Windows Live Messenger 2011, which is another software in the package. Lets now take a look at the Live Photo Gallery.

Surprisingly, its a light weight software for your computer. I had expected it to be a heavy software, but I was wrong. The software is very simple to use and is not flooded with features you dont want. And its not a professional tool, so dont keep your hopes high. Microsoft will not give away professional tools for free like this.

This will come to use if you want to edit your home photos. The software will automatically fetch all the photos and videos from your Pictures and Videos libraries. So there is no need to set a path where the software can find your mulitmedia collection. Once this is done, the left pane will have your entire collection in a tree structure, easy for you to navigate. By default, everything in the left pane is selected, so you get all the photos and videos on your computer.

The software supports tagging of photos. You can tag the photos using people tags, goe tags or use some descriptive tags. You can even add captions to photos. All these are found in the right pane. Just a select a picture and you are ready to use any tag. If you are using Windows Live Messenger also, all your contacts from there will be imported here. So you can use these names as tag if you are using people tag on photos. Comes in very handy.

If you notice the toolbar, you can see Facebook, SkyDrive, YouTube, Flickr and Messenger icons. This means that you can share your photos and videos on these social networking sites easily from where you are instead of opening your browser and uploading those files. This is a real good option. I tried sharing a pic on Facebook, you can see the screenshot. But again, as in the Live Messenger 2011, Twitter integration is not present. What if i wanted to share a pic or video on Twitter? This is just not good.

I already mentioned that there are a few image editing tools as well. But these are very basic tools. Some of them are rotate, auto adjust, crop, color and a few others. I repeat, you can not use this as a professional photo editing software (because its free from Microsoft). You can change the colors, add some effects and thats it. You can see that I was trying out something with the color tool. I had no idea that the autosave feature is turned on by default. So when I was done playing with the software, I closed the file, guess what happened? Yes, it was saved and now I can never get my image back as it was. So be careful when you try to do this.
