Those who have Facebook accounts by now, are lucky because one of the major headaches of creating a fresh account on a social networking site like Facebook is getting all your contacts. Most of the users who use internet now use GMail as their first and primary email id. And all the contacts will be saved in this id.

Facebook vs GoogleSo the best way to import all your friends and family into a social networking account is to import the contacts from this email id to your account. That is what most of us did when we created a Facebook account. But now, this cant happen any more, as Google has restricted Facebook from accessing users’ contacts list on GMail.

This is a reaction to some particular action. But what is that action? Lets see. Most of us dont know, but Google is working on a social networking site, somewhat like Facebook. And when Facebook can access Google contacts, why cant Google access Facebook contacts? This sounds logical, right? But have you ever seen an option anywhere with which you could import or use your contacts in Facebook? No, because Facebook doesn’t allow this.

As Google is building a social networking site, it asked Facebook to provide the same permission to Google. But Facebook dint reply to that. Google got angry and restricted Facebook’s access to its area. Long story, made short. This is not good for anyone. Its not a problem for those who already have a Facebook account and have imported all their contacts, but for people who are signing up for a new account, its a burden to get all the contacts into Facebook.

A Google spokes person stated that the policy has:

The fact that users often aren’t aware that once they have imported their contacts into sites like Facebook they are effectively trapped. We hope that reciprocity will be an important step towards creating a world of true data liberation and that this move will encourage other websites to allow users to automate the export of their contacts as well.

So how can new users import the contacts? Well, there is a way, but it definitely is not a shortcut. You can download your contacts to your computer from your GMail account. This file will be machine readable. Then you can import this file into Facebook to get the details of your contacts.

But it will be very good and a lot better if the two internet giants come into a decision and make the job easy for users, after all, that is what is needed.
